Spices and their arrival

Most spices are plant fruits. Others are bark, roots, seeds, tears that “run” from the trunks or even spots as in the case of the saffron. Not all have the same origin. Most are produced in India, Southeast Asia and China. Hot pepper, allspice and vanilla came from the Americas, while many come from native plants of the Near East.

And if today spices are available in abundance in the markets and at very affordable prices, things were not always like this. They were once hard to find, expensive and precious. That is why their trade started early and flourished for many centuries, opening the famous “spice roads” from the east – mainly India – to the west and gradually putting a lot of peoples in the profitable “game” of transporting them to Europe , from the Jews of Solomon to the Arabs and Egyptians and from the Venetians to the Portuguese, but also the Spaniards, who, looking for an easier and safer route to India, trusted the visions of Columbus with the result – because of the coveted spices – an entire continent to discover!
